Government's efforts to provide relief assistance to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Pakistan
The ongoing military operation against the militants is making great progress. Around 85% of Swat valley has already been cleared of the militants.
Over 800 militants have so far been killed and over 600 have so far been captured in Swat and Malakand operation.
Around 2.4 million people have been forced to leave their homes and the number is increasing.
The Government of Pakistan has taken immediate steps to address this grave humanitarian crisis. The entire government machinery has been mobilized to provide relief to victims of terrorism.
A cash grant of Rs.1.5 billion has already been made by the Government of Pakistan.
The Government has announced a special grant of Rs.25,000 ($309) for each displaced family. The payment is being made to around 250,000 families.
The Government is also providing relief packages including tents, blankets, sleeping mats, kitchen sets, jerry cans, buckets, plastic sheets, mosquito nets and food to displaced families.
The Government has also committed to provide employment to one member of the family that has lost a member to the barbarity of militants.
Field hospitals are being set up by the Government to provide necessary medical care to the displaced persons. Special arrangements are being made for providing maternity care to pregnant women.
While the Government is fully committed to meet the needs of displaced persons, its resources are limited. The help of international community is absolutely essential for the success of our efforts to combat terrorism and extremism.
The current estimates of the resource requirements to provide short, medium and long-term assistance to the IDPs is as under:
- Displacement Cash Compensation $125 million
- Relief Operation and Camp Management $600 million
(UN estimates)
- Restoration of Livelihoods $175 million
- Reconstruction and rehabilitation $1100 million
(World Bank's Rapid Survey)
Total: $ 2.00 billion
